When it comes to military aviation, fiber optics isn't a new technology, but is just now gaining more momentum. Like any large, established industry like military aviation, fiber optic technology implementation requires testing, developing standards, and training a large number of individuals.

In today's era of aviation, fiber optic technology won't be able to sit patiently on the sidelines for much longer. Fiber optics offer much higher bandwidth, higher clarity, and more security than rival technologies. Other benefits of fiber optics in aviation are its immunity from electromagnetic interference and its light weight.

The first deployment of aviation fiber optics was the AV-8B and is currently in use on the F/A-18E/F. Future fiber optic advancements on the horizon include WDM (wavelength division multiplexing), a technology that will reduce today's required footprint for analog and digital communications.

NAVAIR (Naval Air Systems Command), along with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is working tirelessly on developing and fine tuning a set of standards for aviation fiber optics. Fiber optics best practices and standardization practices are being created by a subset of SAE called JELLI (Jumpers, Endfaces, Link-Loss and Inspection).
